Our Lives are Salmon Lives

After three years of working with Alaskans all across the state, this is what we know—our lives are salmon lives. Our families, our values and our economies are all linked to this king of fish. As Alaskans, we don’t just see salmon as another part of the landscape, we see them as a part of who we are. They are our connection to the land, they are how we feed our families and they are the subject of many stories told in the dark of winter.

When we launched The Salmon Project in 2012, our mission was to celebrate wild salmon’s place at the heart of Alaskan life. As our work took us to all corners of the state, we discovered that the ways Alaskans feel connected to salmon are just as wild, beautiful and diverse as the people themselves. We also discovered something amazing: when Alaskans talk about salmon, they don’t just talk about a fish. They talk about love.

Ensuring that salmon remain abundant in Alaska’s future means making choices. It means not only understanding what we need from salmon, but what they need from us.

Salmon Love is universal in our state. But like most love affairs, our affections sometimes obscure the bigger picture. Too often we see salmon through our own narrow lens– as “our fish” or “their fish.”

We are so focused on the end of our own lines that we forget to appreciate the salmon lives of others. This is the idea behind Salmon Life: Salmon Love – to recognize the enduring love for salmon that resides in the heart of every Alaskan.

Ensuring that salmon remain abundant in Alaska’s future means making choices. It means seeing the vital role these fish play in our lives today and making small choices in every passing year—choices that lean toward salmon. It means recognizing and honoring our neighbors’ connections to salmon as much as we recognize and honor our own. It means not only understanding what we need from salmon, but what they need from us.

This winter, join us as we celebrate the amazing diversity of Alaska’s salmon lives. We’ve traveled the state documenting the lives of Alaskans who are inspired and sustained by salmon. Whether salmon is the center of your community or you eat it once a year, find out how salmon bridge the gaps and bring Alaskans of all stripes together through our shared Salmon Love.

Salmon is not about our differences, it’s about what we have in common – Salmon Life: Salmon Love.
